Diamagnetic Aluminum Pipe and Large Neodymium Magnet (With Video)
The video is about a very cool experiment. We all know that aluminum is not attracted to magnets, but, if the aluminum or the magnet is moving, something amazing happens. To try this yourself, you will need a neodymium magnet, a coin, and an aluminum pipe. Ok, let’s see what happens when I drop the coin down to the pipe. It falls quickly.
Now let’s drop a magnet and see what happens. Pretty cool right? So here is why: a moving magnet creates electrical currents in aluminum, electric currents create magnetic fields, causing the object to slow down this is, also known as the Lenz Effect. Now let’s see what happens when we push the strong magnet. As you can see the aluminum pipe follows the magnet. Impressive!
